You'll see it most often in healthcare, EMS, manufacturing, and other round-the-clock operations β€” anywhere the lights can't go off at 5 p.m.

It's a separate line from overtime. You can work a totally normal 12-hour night shift, no overtime involved, and still see a differential added on top of your base rate β€” because the time of day, not the hours worked, is what triggers it.

Two common ways it gets calculated

Broadly, employers structure night differential one of two ways:

Some employers use a flat rate because it's simple and predictable. Others prefer a percentage because it scales automatically as base pay rises. Neither approach is "more standard" than the other β€” it genuinely depends on the employer, and in unionized workplaces, it's often spelled out in the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) rather than set unilaterally by HR.

The night window isn't universal either

Even the definition of "night" varies. Some employers start the differential at a fixed clock time; others tie it to whatever hours a specific shift covers, so a 7 p.m.–7 a.m. rotation might get the diff for the whole shift rather than just the hours after a set cutoff. Weekend and holiday differentials often stack on top of β€” or get calculated separately from β€” the night differential, which is where paychecks start to look genuinely confusing.

Who actually sets the rules

This is the part worth sitting with: your night differential rate, your night window, and your eligibility all come from your employer's policy, your union contract, or in some places, a legal minimum β€” not from a single rule that applies everywhere.
